Secrets of Good Will !

*This is a repeat post for old-timers but I thought you new guys on the block may enjoy as I take a few days off. I think you need to REALLY get to know me. : ) Stick around, I have a bunch of catching up to do! Love, Me*

Today was a busy day but we had a chance to stop by one of our local Goodwill's.

Got these pretties and a few other things, while I left Romeo in the car, munching on some chicken nuggets.....

Aren't they pretty?
Go perfectly in color with my existing plates.
I like having an alternate pattern with the same exact color scheme.

I had planned to run in Goodwill while Romeo finished up his lunch,
And had left him with the statement...
"I will be right back, I'm going to just run in ."

That was my intention......and nothing more.
It started out innocently.....I promise.

But.....
Did you know that when a bell rings at Goodwill that a new load of "stuff" is coming out the back?

I - did - not - know - that.
I have been hitting Goodwill's for years now .

Years.

And ..... did....... not...... know...... that.

Today, when I was going to "just run in and out".
That all changed.

I was rapidly perusing the aisles, when I heard the bell in the back ring.

And a little lady next to me said.......
"The bell rang!" "It's a new batch!"

I smiled politely at the back of her departing head......

And.....

It was like a "Matrix" moment.
Things slowed down......
And as I watched her bobbing, curler clad, running head, bounce to the back in tunnel vision........

It hit me.

"A new batch?"
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
A NEW baaaatcccchhhh.....

Oh - my - goodness.......a new BATCH!!!!
And I realized what the bell ringing meant.

But realization hit me and so did a dilemma.

What do I do when "the bell rings"????

Do I run to the back?

Wouldn't I look greedy....anxious....desperate?

I stood there browsing through aisles
Fighting the urge to run to the back, to see what new stuff was brought in.

And after careful, logical thinking, I decided.
"Hey....I am just as greedy, anxious and desperate as that old lady in the walker running to the back!"
And, to be honest, is there really a "Proper Goodwill Etiquette" book laying around?
I don't think so.

So.......to not look too desperate.
I just worked my way casually to the back.

At a fast little clip.

And before I could make it back there....

The bell rang again!
My stomach tied up in knots.
I couldn't see the back yet.....and I was trying to get past poky people in the aisles.
I fought the urge to panic, maneuvered down unobstructed aisles and I picked it up a pace.

And I made it.
There was a cluster of people looking through carts, grabbing stuff, and they were all looking over their shoulders to see what competition they had.....
I finagled my way in there and well......

The "new stuff hysteria" took over.
I just started taking what looked good.....and putting it in my cart.

I walked away with about ten things in my cart.

Then....I took my cart and I stepped away from the masses....and cleared my head.
I looked at items in my cart that I didn't even need and sorted what I wanted and didn't.
Embarrassed at myself!

I took the items that I didn't want, back to the carts with people milling around and placed them on it.
I felt like someone on a beach, feeding birds bread.......
Hands started grabbing at the stuff I was bringing back before I could even let go.
I had one hand on my cart claiming ownership to the stuff I wanted and the other putting my greed induced items back.
What was wrong with those people?

Then I walked back towards the front.
Ashamed of myself.
So ashamed.
AND

The bell rang again, baby!
And Angels sang!
Shame vanished in an instant and the greedy monster took over!

I ran right back with my "new friends".
And then I would scurry away, like a rat with cheese...calm down....and sort out what I really wanted.

I swear .....it went like this until I finally pulled myself away and made myself stop.

I was like a gambler not wanting to quit.
Thinking the next bell would be the big score...the mother load....payday.

I was pitiful.
I'm so ashamed.
So ashamed.

I'm excited.
I can't wait to go back!

And I am already planning my next "fix".

Aren't I hideous?
Aren't my plates cute?!

And what about this pretty?

That old man that was reaching for it was so going to sell it at his flea market...I just know it!

Or give it to his ailing wife.
I'm awful!
I'm lucky!

I'm confused.
And I can't wait to go back.

Have you ever been to a Goodwill?
Did you guys know the bell ringing thing at Goodwill?
Would you shop at one?
Would you run, walk, or meander your way to the back.

It can't be just me.
I hope.

Love,

Me

  4. No.. I did NOT know that. I must confess, I have only been to the local Goodwill twice. The first time the Mr. and I had dropped our youngest and his date ( early teens, not old enough to drive) to the movies which happens to be across the street from the Goodwill. So, with 2 hrs to kill, why not. Second time , I think I was with a friend. Got a couple of glasses. But now, I am curious!!! I want to hear the bell too. :D Do I have a greedy monster inside?? Hmmm...

  15. Very Very funny story! I used to work at Goodwill. We unfortunately did not have a bell, but we had a huge furniture room in the back that only opened at 4. People would line up from 3:30 on to get in this room. It was a lot of fun to see what they would find, and who would find the jewel first!

  18. Well, I've never noticed the bell...but I know when they bring new stuff out, I just grab anything that looks good and then I walk to the other side of the store and look at it and ask myself..why did I grab this?...and then I slowly take most of it back to the shelf and then I get upset if someone picks it up and ask myself...why did I put that back? Goodwill makes my heart skip beats! lol I will listen for the bell!

  23. My Goodwill makes a public service announcement over the intercom, "Attention Goodwill shoppers, a cart of wares is coming to the floor". It has the same effect on me as the bell does for you (and Pavlov's dog as I recall). Salivation, fingers become claws, hazel eyes glow red with desire!!!

  25. Last year my Mr and I went to Tennessee for a weekend of thrifting...I know I have an awesome husband. He even mapped it all out! Anyway we hit several GW's.At one of the stores we noticed people going behind the store so we wondered back their. I was where EVERYTHING that doesn't sell in the store is brought and you can buy it by weight. They bring out EIGHT huge bins ...you can't touch any until all eight are in place and then it is on baby. It didn't take me long before I was right in the middle of it. I think we actually paid more than the stuff was worth because we didn't really know how it worked, but most of the people there had booths somewhere and bought in bulk. We really need to do that again! Funny post by the way!

  27. I know nothing of this ringing bell.Hmmm Your post made me laugh out loud, too funny. I too would have played it cool to not look too greedy or desperate, but I too wouldn't be able to handle not knowing what I could possibly be missing out on and would have to join the quick moving heard ;0). I am headed to goodwill today, will have to listen for a bell....

  28. I love the blue dishes. Reminds me of polish pottery that I collect. I love the to mix and match my polish pottery, but all have the same blue color. I don't know anything about a bell ringing at Goodwill, but your post made me laugh and I needed a laugh for the day!! Thanks for providing one. Jill

  30. Hilarious! A few of my friends and I are thrifting addicts and my home is definitely described by many as eclectic. I'm not sure if they are giving me a back-handed compliment when they say it, but I don't care! LOL This post brought tears to my eyes and I will definitely be sharing it with my Number 1 thrifting enabler when she returns home from a trip up north... I have a feeling she will appreciate it as much as I do...and I'm willing to bet she will say, "How do you like my $2 shoes, 20cent shirt, and $2 purse I got up north?!? They'll go great with the $1 pair of jeans that I got in a bag sale before I left!" :O)

For me, the two greatest parts of hitting the GW Boutiques have to be the hidden gems I've found and the fact that I really have a need to recycle. I truly believe that we should use what we have until it can't be used anymore! I'm a tree hugger for life.

Thanks for making me laugh tonight!

  31. Oh, My goodness! Can I ever relate! ROFL!! When I lived in Missouri, our Goodwill there did not have a bell to ring when they brought out new thingsl; however, they had lot's of people who would patiently wait in "action alley" near the doors where they would bring new things out. It was always a "mad dash" to find new treasures, and beat the crowd, reaching and grabbing, and making fools of themselves. ( notice I did not include myself in that group, LOL) Since moving to SC, our Goodwill has a bell, and it ALWAYS rings right when i am about to check out, then i have to excuse myself and do the 50 yard dash to the back of the store to see what treasures await. I love it when the Goodwill stores get almost new items from Target. I have decorated most of my house with Goodwill or thrift store finds. It's the only way to shop!! thanks for sharing!

  32. Ohh so true.. I do declare they know when I am headed for the checkout.. That blamed bell rings and my cart does a u turn every time! A short trip is out of the question I think.. Heck fire the bell might ring again..how can u leave?

  33. I must not be living right because I've never heard a bell ring at GW! lol Love this post - your description of how you reacted and felt is so funny and aptly describes just how I think I might feel in the same situation. I've often found that when I'm going to GW, the closer I get, the faster I drive...I'm afraid I'm going to miss out on some great thing...craziness I tell you!

  34. How come I've never ever heard a bell ring and I've been going to Goodwill forever? Was there yesterday in fact for a good while and never heard a bell. It was a Sunday after all so maybe that was it? Great posts on Goodwill Glad I found you!
